I have been hooked on photography since the age of 15, when my grandmother in Japan gave me my first camera, a Yashica Electro 35. Since then, I have built my photographic library with the use of my complete Nikon system and White-Lightning strobes. Currently I use a Canon 5D MK2 with various Canon lenses. I also use a Fuji S3 converted to deep black infrared. I used to shoot everything in sight, but am now more content photographing my favorite subjects - Nature, Classic Cars and Reenactments.
Having obtained a Master's Degree in Biology, with a specialization in Entomology (Insects and Scorpions), along with my extensive field experience and contacts, I have been able to capture God's miniature world of insects. Knowing the behavior of particular insects, and where and when they are available, gives me a definite advantage in capturing in photographing them. Recent annual trips to Arizona have yielded many new images, including some being used by the USFS for educational purposes. I love using the computer to create Entomological posters, bookmarks, and greeting cards that I can share with others. I also participate in annual "Insect Fairs" where my photos are used to educate other nature enthusiasts and photographers.
I have also won several photo awards, including the Grand Prize in the Kodak/Popular Photography Annual Medium Format contest; a First and Second Place in the Popular Photography Annual Photo contest for "Animals" and "Digital Imaging"; a Best of Show in Contemporary at the Photographic Society of America's annual slide competition, and was a finalist in the Photographer's Forum Canon Photo contest. I have also been a Grand Prize winner in two on-line contests: BetterPhoto.com (USA) and Photography-Unlimited.jp (Japan).
I have been published in/by BBC Books, Capstone-Press, Harcourt Brace & Co., Houghton Mifflin, McGraw-Hill Science, Scholastic Inc., The International Library of Photography, Time-Life Books, World Book Publishing, World Wildlife Fund and the following magazines: Answers, BBC Wildlife, Birds and Blooms, Conservation, Creation, Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, IFPO, Kids Discover, National Geographic, Ninja, Peterson's Photographic, Popular Photography, Ranger Rick, SWAT and Zoolife.
Currently, I am represented by Photographer's Direct and Alamy through my agent, Jan Stromme. Jan is not only a terrific agent, but a very talented and artistic photographer as well. He can be reached at his e-mail address of: firstname.lastname@example.org. I am also represented now by Acclaim Images of Medford, Oregon.
I am married and have two children, and we attend Grace Community Church in Sun Valley. My wife helps critique my images while the kids help me find some of the bugs that I photograph. I couldn't do this without them. In my "spare time", I enjoy teaching a realistic self-protection class, "The Great Escape", for men and women. I have written articles for "Self Defense for Women" magazine, and have been personally trained by Mr. Robert Bussey, "The King of Combat". He can be reached through his website: www.robertbussey.com.
